Wiltshire Police sealed Wilton Road off around 8:30am after a suspicious item was found at the city's Law Courts.

A bomb disposal squad from Tidworth was called to the scene.

The suspicious item, which was later confirmed not to be a viable device, was made safe using a controlled water detonation.

The road reopened at 11am.

A British Army spokesperson said:

“We can confirm that an Army team from Tidworth Troop, 721 Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Squadron, 11 EOD & Search Regiment, Royal Logistic Corps, responded to an incident at Salisbury Crown Court at the request of Wiltshire Police. The incident was declared a hoax and the scene was safely handed back to Wiltshire Police.”

Andrew Blythe who lives nearby took a picture of what prompted the response before emergency services attended.

He told Greatest hits Radio that he thought at first it was a 'bit of string in the door.'

"I took a photo and when I got home and blew it up I could clearly see someone wedged in a 10 foot long cable wire into the door and it ran down around the tin and the other end was in tin. Then I realised that looks dodgy, as I went back out the first police arrived."

" It was definitely made to look like a bomb."

The words 'Justis Not' and 'Lore-less' were also scrawled on the building.
