Virtual Balloon Race raises thousands for Salisbury Hospice
The winner's even made a lovely gesture to the charity
Salisbury Hospice say their first fundraiser of 2021 has been 'incredible', and a great way to kick off the celebrations for their 40th anniversary year.
They'd asked supporters to sponsor a virtual balloon that was 'raced' from Salisbury from New Year's Day.
Real time weather conditions and maps were then used to track where the balloons might end up after a week's worth of racing.
Some of the balloons even burst or blew off course during the course of the event, which could easily have happened in a real race.
The winning balloon, named 'Raymond W', made its way over to Spain, travelling 781.49 kilometres.
The owner of that, who wants to remain anonymous, won a £250 prize, but has donated it back to the Hospice - they said:
"I can't believe it, what a fabulous start to a miserable year."
Second place went to Screaming Bear Demon and third to Lando Noris.
The event has raised £4,500 for Salisbury Hospice.
That's a help towards the charity's fundraising getting started for 2021, as they have to raise £1.5 million a year towards running services there.
During the pandemic, Salisbury Hospice has been given around £100,000 of Government support as well, according to the city's MP.
The Virtual Balloon Race was sponsored by Salisbury's Smith and Williamson accountants.
Lisa Ball, Managing Partner there said:
"We are glad to have been involved in such a great activity, helping to raise money for this fantastic local cause. It was fun getting involved, following our balloons on their journeys and we look forward to racing again in the future! The current uncertainty has meant many charities including Salisbury Hospice Charity have really suffered with postponed and cancelled events over the past year and we are so pleased that we can continue to offer support for this important charity within the local community."
