An author from Salisbury is highlighting those who have made a difference in our community whilst giving independent businesses a much needed boost.

Mark Dawson has set up a Facebook page where we can nominate people, every Friday someone will be chosen to receive a ÂŁ50 voucher to spend in a local business.

Mark, who is best known for his spy thriller John Milton series, explained more;

"The last year has been difficult for everyone; from those who have been home schooling their kids, to high street businesses that have been forced to close and, of course, to those who have lost loved ones."

"There have been challenges and trials that we've all had to face. I've been fortunate in that being a writer has not been affected by COVID; quite the opposite, in fact. People off work have been in need of distraction and, because of that, sales have been good. I'm aware that not everyone has been as fortunate and I'd like to do what I can to foster some joy and happiness and, at the same time, help local businesses as they get back on their feet."

LOCAL HEROES

Among those chosen to receive a voucher in recognition of their efforts is Mary Pedley, a doctor at Salisbury District Hospital, who worked on the covid ward.

Rachel Houston was selected for her efforts to move Aspire Martial Arts online so kickboxing and taekwondo students could continue their training during the pandemic.

The woman behind the famous bears at Bishopdown Farm which entertained people during the first lockdown was also chosen.

Jean Hales was nominated by Richard Goodsman who said the daily display kept spirits up;

"The children ( and adults) absolutely loved it. It has become a local talking point and the whole estate are very grateful for the effort"

The bears proved a huge hit with locals on their daily exercise during lockdown

Businesses which are being supported by the scheme include Lime Tree Spa, Nole Pizza, Cosy Club, Grillado, Fisherton Mill and Adorn Beauty.

The scheme is set to to run for a year.

Mark told Greatest Hits Radio, he just wanted to do his bit;

"It's only a small thing, I'm not pretending this is going to change the world but it is nice to be able to tell people that others have noticed what they have done and to thank them."
