Salisbury FC say they don't believe an elite 'European Super League' is good for football and that it "discredits the integrity of the game".

An announcement was made yesterday (Sunday 18th April) that 12 of the continent's biggest football clubs have all agreed to create their own, mid-week competition.

Amongst them are 6 English sides; Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Liverpool.

The plans have been met with much criticism online, with many seeing it having a detrimental effect on the game of football.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden have both condemned the announcement.

With the move likely to send shockwaves across the system, Salisbury FC and manager Steve Claridge have now had their say.

In a statement, Salisbury FC told Greatest Hits Radio:

"We don't believe that an elite European Super League is good for football. Domestic football relies on the competition and drive that the pyramid system creates. With a closed league at the very top, without any possible entry or departure, we feel it will potentially discredit the integrity of the game.

On a positive note for Salisbury FC, we have had supporters of top-flight teams make known their intention to start looking towards their local non-league clubs for their football fix. They're assured a warm welcome to clubs that really need them. An afternoon at Salisbury FC's Ray Mac comes at a fraction of the cost of a league game. The quality is still very good and the passionate and friendly nature of our supporters means you're one of the football family soon after your first visit. You also know that anything you spend is put straight into your club and is reinvested."

Meanwhile Claridge took to Twitter to make his views known, saying supporters have been betrayed:

The Whites' Southern League season has been cut short due to the pandemic, for the second season running.

It's hoped the 2021/22 season will start as normal later this year.
