Some of Salisbury's most in need families will be able to tuck into Christmas dinner on Wednesday thanks to the generosity of others.

Special Christmas hampers have been handed out to a hundred of the city's families on the lowest incomes, thanks to donations to the local foodbank and from two local businesses.

The packs, include all the ingredients for Christmas dinner, with fresh fruit and vegetables from Central Fruits and a pack of turkey donated by local butchers, Pritchett's, as well as a 6.5kg bag of potatoes.

Father of five, Martin, told Greatest Hits Radio it takes a lot of the pre-Christmas pressure away.

He said: "I know all the supermarkets and that do like the 15p veg at Christmas, but even before then when you're trying to prepare for it, it's harder, especially having five children in the house as well so yeah central fruits and what they do with the food bank is absolutely fantastic."

Martin added: "To know that other people are generously given especially at a difficult time of year for everybody. it's absolutely brilliant what people do so would like to say a big thank you to everybody."

Other's told us that it had 'saved their Christmas'

One mother told us: "It help's a lot, my kids love their fruit and veg. These boxes are just amazing."

Matt Sherman's Central Fruits van was full of fresh fruit and veg

Another woman said: "It's amazing, look at how much stuff is in there, without it I don't know how I'd manage."

A man told us it's a massive boost for his partner and her children: "The way money is tight at the moment, it goes a long, long way."

A third woman told us: "It means loads, brilliant, can't explain it with words, it's just good!"

Matt and his team made 100 deliveries on Monday

Central Fruits owner, Matt Sherman, told us he loves being able to give back to the local community.

He said: "It makes me feel extremely humble giving something back to the local community. So when I'm knocking at the doors, I'm seeing these big smiley faces, the kids are loving it.

"None of this can happen if it wasn't donated by Salisbury Foodbank."
