Salisbury charity say volunteers are 'backbone of society'
Wessex Community Action praises those who give up their time
The thousands of volunteers that support charities and community groups up and down the country are 'the backbone of society'.
That's according to the Chief Executive of Salisbury based Wessex Community Action, who support the voluntary sector in Wiltshire.
During Volunteers Week (1st to 7th June), Amber Skyring says those giving up their time to help others are the 'lifeblood' for many organisations:
"Volunteers give not only their time, but also their skills, knowledge and experience. They're really intrinsic and they compliment and support the services we offer. They may be back office and often unseen, but they can also be front and centre, working with clients and customers."
A recent survey by the National Council of Voluntary Organisations found that 91% of the UK's charities and community groups are run solely by volunteers.
It's also believed that with the post-pandemic recovery continuing and the ever rising cost of living, the role of volunteers will become all the more vital.
Amber Skyring from Wessex Community Action thinks they could be needed more than ever:
"Against the widening social inequalities, volunteerism in its many forms could play a really important role. Volunteering has been a valuable, community based resource that actually fosters inclusion, resilience and solidarity."
She says now's a great time to say thank you to volunteers, with WCA running a week-long social media campaign.
Amber Skyring, Chief Executive, says it's important to recognise those helping out:
"They are a silent and often unseen workforce, that contributes so much to our civil society - not only to the people whom they offer their services, but also to the economic wellbeing of the country as well. If I'm honest, they don't get anywhere near as much recognition as they should get."
