Salisbury Cathedral opens its doors tonight (15th December) as it holds its annual late night festive opening.

It's the fifth time the free event has been held.

It's a chance to check out the huge 32 foot Christmas tree adorned with a thousand LED lights and hear seasonal music from the Kate Edgar choir.

Children will be able to play on the Cathedral's child-friendly wooden Nativity, made by local artist Ray Wirick.

The cast is expanding this year with new figures added to the Holy Family and its friendly donkey and sheep.

The Education Department will also be helping with children Christmas crafts.

Volunteer flower arrangers have made a festive flower arch in the Cloisters which organisers say is a great selfie spot!

The Refectory and Cathedral Shop are also opening late, so visitors can get a bite to eat or a spot of last-minute Christmas retail therapy.

You can also take a free trip up to the west window, you'll need to add your name to the signing in sheets when you arrive.

The event also marks the rare opportunity to explore the Cathedral's own library.

Emily Naish, Cathedral archivist and collections manager and Dr Anne Dutton, Cathedral Librarian will be on duty to talk to visitors to give you the history of the library and they will have three very special books on display themed around Christmas:

The newly installed art exhibition by David Batchelor is also on display.

The event runs from 6.30pm until 8.30pm.

Festive films

The Cathedral is also showing two festive films on a big screen this Saturday (17th).

Elf is on at 2pm with the Muppet Christmas Carol at 7pm.
