Salisbury Cathedral charges now in effect
They've decided to ask tourists to pay to take a look around.
From today (Tuesday 1st September), people visiting Salisbury Cathedral will need to pay to enter.
But those charges won't apply to city residents, those attending services, or people who live within the Salisbury Diocese.
They've been brought in as the Cathedral's expected to have a £2 million shortfall in their income this year.
HOW MUCH WILL ENTRY BE?
If you don't meet the criteria for having your entry fee waived, it'll cost:
- £8 for adults
- £5 for students aged 13-18
- Free for children under 12
The huge £2 million public appeal that launched last week (Thursday 27th August), has already raised more than £150,000.
But Salisbury Cathedral's calling on the community to help them through a difficult time, caused by a four month closure through lockdown, reduced capacity for visitors and the cancellation of events.
The Dean of Salisbury, Nick Papadopolus, is asking for our support:
"I know that this has been a very challenging time for all of us, nobody has come out of this unscathed. I know there are other agencies and partners in the city whose budgets have suffered as well. That means for all of us there are an awful lot of calls on our wallets at this time, lots of good, worthy causes are asking for our money.
"I simply ask that as one of those, as what I hope is in some sense a beating heart at the centre of Salisbury, that has a crucial role in bringing visitors to our city and driving the local economy, I hope people will amongst all the other calls feel able to support us."
BOOK YOUR TICKETS
Pre-booking is essential for visits to Salisbury Cathedral at the moment, due to limited numbers allowed on site.
That applies to everyone who doesn't have to pay entry fees, as well as those who will need to pay.
Tickets are for a certain timeslot, available through the Cathedral website, or by calling 01722 512156.
