Salisbury Big Sleepers braced for cold weather at Cathedral
Brave Alabaré supporters are spending tonight on the Cloister floors
Those taking part in tonight's Big Sleep in Salisbury (Friday 10th March) are bracing themselves for cold temperatures.
The event, which is now at full capacity, will see participants spend a night on the floors of Salisbury Cathedral, aiming to raise money for city charity Alabaré, to help homeless people.
Events manager for Alabaré, Rebecca Mullen told Greatest Hits Radio that it is “wonderful” to see the event sold out, despite the threat of a very cold evening:
“We have over 200 people who believe their one night of uncomfortable and cold is going to make a difference to the homeless. That is so good!”
This year’s participants range from school children to adults in their 80’s.
Salisbury's MP John Glen is among those taking part - for his 12th Big Sleep.
He's said it's always a tough night, but worth it to support those less fortunate:
"It's a way of me demonstrating my support for what Alabaré do in Salisbury. I wouldn't say I look forward to sleeping out, but I think it's a good moment for the city to come together and reflect on those who have much greater needs than we have as individuals."
John Glen says he's invested in some new ear plugs for this year's event, in the hope of getting a bit more sleep than previous years.
He's also got some tips for first timers:
"Keep your head warm, keep your feet warm, try to have two sleeping bags if that's not cheating, and try to have something between the sleeping bag and the floor because it can get very cold!"
Alabaré help rough sleepers, as well as providing homes for parents with babies and assisting veterans who are finding life difficult after leaving the military.
In 2022, the number of people seeking help grew as the cost-of-living crisis took hold of the UK, with rough sleeping numbers increasing by 26%.
Two of the biggest contributors in causing homelessness are finances or relationship breakdowns.
