A new supermarket for Salisbury has been granted planning approval by Wiltshire Council - meaning the city will soon get an Asda store.

The store is due to built on land at Hampton Park, between London Road and Green Lane.

The plans also include a petrol station on site, a drive-thru coffee shop and parking spaces for over 320 vehicles.

Asda's estimated to be spending £20 million on building the branch, which is expected to create over 200 jobs.

The supermarket chain previously had planning permission for the same site, granted in 2017 - but a resubmission was needed after the approval expired.

Rival chain Tesco has called for a judicial review into the scheme, citing an 'unacceptable retail impact on the city centre'.

Salisbury City Council also objected to the plans, on environmental grounds.

An Asda spokesperson said:

“After over two years of working collaboratively with officers, local elected representatives and residents, we are delighted that our application for a new superstore, petrol filling station and coffee drive-thru in Salisbury has been approved.

"We are looking forward to bringing new jobs and opportunities, facilities and great Asda value to the local community.”
