The crackdown on fly-tipping in Wiltshire has continued with a pair of businesses in the South of the county being fined.

A company in Salisbury and one in Amesbury have both been hit with Fixed Penalty Notices (FPN) of £1,000.

Whilst responding to an ongoing issue of waste at St Paul's roundabout in Salisbury, enforcement officers discovered two black bags at the exit of the layby.

The bags had been dumped directly under a sign warning against fly-tipping. An investigation led to a FPN being issued to a local business.

Meanwhile, in Amesbury, another business has been handed an FPN are being found to be disposing of commercial waste in public litter bins.

This meant the organisation was avoiding the legitimate costs of waste disposal.

Business owners are warned that they're required to take all reasonable steps to ensure that their waste is collected, stored and disposed of lawfully.

All waste should be collected by a registered waste carrier that is authorised to collect commercial waste and then disposed of at an authorised site.

Businesses must also ensure that they provide an accurate description of the waste when it is transferred to another person with a waste transfer note.

As FPNs are not a conviction in court, the businesses cannot be named.

Cllr Nick Holder, Wiltshire Council Cabinet Member for Highways, Street Scene and Flooding, said:

“These three penalties demonstrate our Business Plan commitment to keeping Wiltshire clean and safe. Fly-tipping not only harms our environment but also places a costly burden on us as a council. We will continue to act against those who disregard their waste disposal responsibilities.

“Businesses must understand their duty of care in managing waste. Proper waste storage and disposal not only supports community cleanliness but is also a legal requirement. We’re Targeting Fly-tippers in Wiltshire and failure to comply means we will take action and issue penalties against those who dump waste in our beautiful county.”

Wiltshire Council is encouraging residents and businesses to report fly-tipping incidents and with the Stop at Source (SAS) campaign is reminding people to always use licensed waste carriers to ensure that household or business waste is disposed of correctly.
