Salisbury’s Mayor says having a colourful city with different faiths is what Salisbury ‘is all about’.

Atiqul Hoque has been making it his mission to celebrate the multi-faith community of Salisbury.

On Thursday (14th September), a tree was dedicated by Her Royal Highness, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, to mark the inter-faith communities of Salisbury.

“Having different faiths and different colour, it just goes to show that this is a city to live (in) and it welcomes everyone,” Cllr Hoque said.

The mayor also wants to inspire the next generation to take on the mantle of boosting diversity.

School children were included in several of Thursday’s events with HRH, Cllr Hoque saying that he wants these events to ‘turn their thinking’ as children grow up.

Greatest Hits Radio spoke to Samantha Barrett, a school teacher at St Josephs Catholic school in Laverstock.

She thinks diversity needs to be celebrated across the country.

“It’s so important to the city but also our country. We want to be at peace and enjoying what everyone has to offer.”
