The October half term break is the last chance for many families to get away before Christmas.

With the Covid-19 restrictions holding back some travel plans, the New Forest is expecting to still a large number of visitors throughout this week.

We're being asked to respect the National Park and help 'protect the rare habitats and wildlife' there.

There'll be more National Park Authority rangers on patrol throughout the holiday, to make sure people are using the area responsibly including not parking on verges.

We're also reminded that due to Covid-19 restrictions, some New Forest facilities remain close, so booking ahead is advised.

BBQs and camp fires are banned across the National Park and wild camping is not allowed.

Already some people have been flouting the rules.

New Forest National Park Authority Chairman Gavin Parker said:

"The New Forest is a world capital for wildlife with many rare species and free-roaming animals owned by people called commoners. By following a few simple measures to respect the landscape and local communities, people can stay safe, protect wildlife and habitats, and have a rewarding half term break."

Visitors are also asked to follow social distancing and hygiene guidelines.

As the clocks have changed, drivers are encouraged to #add3minutes to their journeys, and slow down in case there's roaming animals on the New Forest roads.

The New Forest Ambassadors will be out in force too - that's a team of 320 volunteers who have signed to pick up litter in the National Park.

They also monitor issues across the area and share the New Forest Code with visitors.
