Police have issued a warning after they had several reports about nitrous oxide being used in parks in Amesbury.

Up to 50 used and discarded cannisters have been found at Bonnymead Park and The Glenn Collier Skatepark.

Amesbury Police want parents to make sure they're speaking to their children about the dangers of drugs, as they're aware that it is "very often" young people using it.

Nitrous Oxide or "NOS" is sold in canisters and usually inhaled using a balloon.

Talk to Frank says it slows down your brain and your body’s responses, and the effects of the drug varies depending on how much has been inhaled.

They can cause a severe headache or stop you thinking straight.

It says other risks include:

  • Dizziness
  • Regular use could lead to a deficiency of vitamin B12 and to a form of anaemia
  • Can lead to serious nerve damage, causing tingling and numbness in the fingers and toes
  • Regular use can stop you forming white blood cells properly
