A campaign, launched by Wiltshire Council to encourage people to get in touch with the authority if we spot flytipping around the county, has now seen two people get a financial reward for their information.

In the latest case, a resident from near Royal Wootton Bassett reported someone having left black bags of waste and a paint pot onto a grass verge outside his home in April.

They'd been left after the culprit had discovered the local Household Waste Recycling Centre was closed.

The resident took photos as evidence, and with help from Wiltshire Police, the offender was traced.

A man from Swindon was given a fixed penalty notice of £400.

Cllr Bridget Wayman, Wiltshire Council's Cabinet Member for Transport, Highways and Waste, said:

"I would like to thank Wiltshire Police for their assistance with this investigation and to the vigilant member of the public who reported this fly tipping offence. We continue to take a zero-tolerance stance to fly tipping and will take enforcement action where possible against offenders.

"Fixed penalty notices are a significant tool in combating this illegal activity and with the introduction of the 'We're Targeting Fly-tippers' campaign, and the successful reward which this witness has received, we hope this will encourage more members of the public to report fly-tipping incidents to us."
