As we get ever closer to celebrating the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, New Forest District Council say they've been taking part in the Queen's Green Canopy scheme.

That's aiming to increase and protect tree coverage across the country as a 'special gift' to Her Majesty to mark her 70 years on the throne.

New Forest District Council say they'll be planting 60 trees across 30 locations as part of the scheme.

They're taking the patriotic theme a little further, by choosing trees with a 'red, white and blue' theme.

Some of the new trees planted at NFDC's Appletree Court offices

At their Appletree Court offices, three varieties are being planted - a Blue Cedar, Swamp Oak which has red leaves, and Jacquemontii Birch for the white part of the theme, due to lighter colour of its foliage.

Across the district, the new trees will support biodiversity and are suitable for the local climate.

Cllr Derek Tipp, NFDC’s Chairman said:

“As the local authority in the New Forest, we wanted to mark Her Majesty’s incredible 70 years of service. And The Queen’s Green Canopy tree planting project is wholly befitting to the area.

“We have chosen a red, white, and blue theme for the trees, for the planting at our offices at Appletree Court, and a mixture of native and non-native trees across locations in the district.”

ORGANISE YOUR OWN NEW FOREST JUBILEE EVENTS

NFDC is encouraging local residents to find out more about funding for Jubilee events, how to organise a street closure, and how to get involved with The Queen’s Green Canopy project through their website.

Local councillors have each been given an additional £400 in their community grants this year to support Jubilee events.

Grants awarded so far include towards celebrations in Sandleheath and Fordingbridge, and several grants towards tree planting projects.
