He was there for more than a decade and a half

Anyone attending Salisbury Racecourse tonight (Tuesday 24th August) may see a slightly unique named race on the card.

The 19:35pm one is being dedicated to the Clerk of the Course's canine assistant.

Harry the West Highland Terrier passed away just 12 days short of his 17th birthday and was a loyal companion to Jeremy Martin and spent a lot of time at the racecourse.

The race tonight will now be called the Remembering 'Harry' The Racecourse Westie Handicap.

Jeremy said:

“Harry was a big part of Salisbury Racecourse for over a decade and a half. He was a real character and had quite a following on the racecourse Twitter account. He once caused great hilarity when he walked through a large area of newly laid resin surface outside the racecourse office. The contractor wasn’t best pleased though, as it created several hours more work for him to smooth it all over again!

Dogs and indeed all pets are a big part of our lives, and they are always they for us – as loyal companions, stress relievers and providers of affection. We often say to ourselves “where would we be without them”?

Harry lived to just twelve days off his 17th birthday, so had a very long and happy life, and for that I am very thankful. Sunning himself outside the weighing room was his favourite, particularly as he got a bit older. He would then just scratch at the office door to let us know when he was ready to come in!”
