Wiltshire Police are urging shoppers and visitors in Salisbury to be extra vigilant after a spate of purse thefts

The advice is to keep handbags zipped and purses and mobile phones out of sight.

The force say in cafes and restaurants we should keep bags on our lap or loop one strap around the foot of our chair to deter thieves.

Officers also suggest getting a purse bell which clips on to your purse as a 'discreet and highly effective way of deterring offenders.'

More tips have been released in a post on social media.
