Another pony has died on Roger Penny Way after a collision with a car near Fritham just before 9pm on Saturday (7th August).

The four year old, called Juma, suffered two broken legs and internal injuries.

Juma belonged to Sarah Weston who has been left heartbroken.

"Each time this happens there is family that is devastated including the pony's own family. I had to take my ponies off the Forest that night because otherwise they were going to run around panicking over what had happened and standing over his dead body. I had to lead his mother away and all of his little herd and keep them in overnight."

In a statement Hampshire Police said:

"We received a report of a road traffic collision at 8.47pm on Saturday 7 August between a white BMW and a horse on Roger Penny Way. Sadly, the horse died as a result of the injuries it sustained.

A 25-year-old man from Woodgreen was voluntarily interviewed under caution. He was later reported for summons for driving without due care and attention."

PLEA TO BE MORE AWARE OF LIVESTOCK

Sarah held a vigil at the roadside where Juma died before his body was taken away and says "people slow down more to gawp at a dead pony than a live one."

She fears too many motorists regard ponies as 'statues' and fail to realise they can walk or run into the road at any time.

Roger Penny Way is a high risk route for animal accidents.

On New Year's Eve four ponies died after a collision involving a Landrover.

Earlier in December three donkeys and two sheep also died on the same stretch of road in two separate accidents.

The B3078 runs from Cadnam to Godshill and is one of the worst routes for animal accidents.
