The government has announced everyone over 18 in England will be offered a Covid booster by the end of the year.

Boris Johnson is bringing forward his target after concerns of a so called "tidal wave" of the new variant Omicron.

Scientists warn being double jabbed is 'simply not enough' to stop the spread.

The NHS website used to book the jab struggled with demand at one point last night displaying a message showing 'technical issues' before a queing system was introduced.

With local people keen to get their booster jab booked health bosses at Salisbury City Hall's vaccination centre are urging people to be patient and to keep trying the booking system

Appointments can also be made over the phone by calling 119.

A spokesperson told Greatest Hits Radio Salisbury;

"The team at Salisbury City Hall Vaccination Centre are urgently looking at ways to increase the centre's capacity. There are many factors that the team need to consider but it is hoped that more walk-in sessions will be offered as well as an increase in bookable appointment slots.

At the moment the centre is working at full capacity which means that at times no appointments show on the National Booking System. If someone is unable to book when they try we would urge them to keep trying as more slots are being added all the time and there are cancellations.

Vaccination remains the best way to protect yourself, your family and the whole community. Please take up the offer when it's made and get boosted."

The current opening time for the site is 830am to 630pm but that is expected to be extended to boost capacity.

Director of nursing and quality at the Clinical Commissioning Group which covers Wiltshire, Gill May said:

“We are pulling out all the stops to ensure we meet the vaccination target announced by the government.

“It is going to be an incredibly busy few weeks, and I ask for people to show their support to our already-stretched vaccine teams by pre-booking appointments wherever possible and treating our staff with kindness and respect.”

People are reminded to make every effort to attend their vaccination appointment and, where this is not possible, to use the National Booking Service to cancel their slot.

Across the UK military planning teams will be brought in to support additional vaccine sites and mobile units.

Members of the military have previously assisted at Salisbury City Hall.
