Earlier this year, Wiltshire Youth Council set a challenge to schools across the county during Eco Week – and the winners have been announced.

Between 6th and 10th March, school students were encouraged to come up with ideas that could promote positive changes on climate change and green initiatives at their school.

Pewsey Vale School scooped the top prize in the Secondary school category, edging out South Wilts Grammar School in Salisbury to runners-up.

The winners have received an engraved plaque and tree sapling to plant at their school.

The panel of judges noted the volume of projects the school came up with, noting a mileage tracker and innovative ideas such as recycling plastic into rain catchers.

Cllr Tamara Reay, who presented Pewsey Vale with their award, said the judges had been “impressed” by the range of student-led initiatives and ideas.

Cllr Laura Mayes, who was on the judging panel, added: “I would encourage all schools across the county to think about the ways they can take action and support our ambitions to be a carbon neutral county by 2030.”

Participating schools posted images and videos onto social media with the hastag #WYCEcoWeek, while also providing a number of tracker activities to the judges, which helped explain the impact their projects made.

A category was also held for Primary schools, with the winners receiving the same prizes.

Runners up received an engraved plaque.
