The People Friendly Salisbury Low Traffic Zone (LTZ) comes into effect from next Wednesday (21st October), with a number of roads in the city centre closed to traffic.

Some vehicles will be exempt though, such as emergency vehicles, buses, taxis and bicycles.

There are also free permits available for residents in that area, commercial vehicles needing to load and unload, or Blue Badge holders.

The scheme saw some of the streets in the city centre closed off to unauthorised vehicles

Any vehicle over 7.5 tonnes won't be able to use the LTZ between 10.00am and 4.00pm at all, but will need a permit for any other time.

HOW TO APPLY

If you want to apply to Wiltshire Council for a permit, you'll need to visit their website or email parking@wiltshire.gov.uk.

The process is now open for drivers to make sure they have a permit in place for when the LTZ comes into effect.

Permits for residents and Blue Badge holders will be valid for a year and you can apply for renewals, or a new permit, throughout the 18 months of the scheme.

Loading/unloading permits are valid for a month.

Any unauthorised vehicles using the LTZ from Wednesday 21st October will be issued with a fixed penalty notice.

Cllr Bridget Wayman, Cabinet Member for Highways, said:

"Residents, businesses and Blue Badge holders can now apply for free permits to access the LTZ in a motor vehicle.

"The online system makes it easy for eligible people to apply and manage permits, and maintain access to the LTZ.

"People Friendly Salisbury will reduce through traffic in the city centre, improving air quality and prioritising pedestrians and cyclists."
