The Parish Steward scheme across Wiltshire will get an extra £233,000 of Council funding each year for three years.

The local authority decided during their Cabinet meeting on Tuesday (11th October) to give additional cash to the service.

Parish Stewards go out to help fix minor road defects, fill potholes, and trim verges and hedges to support Wiltshire Council's highways team.

They are given their priority tasks for each local community areas, through councillor and public reporting.

A new two-person team will be brought into the scheme, to carry out larger jobs with bigger machinery.

They'll have a new pick-up vehicle, cage trailer, mechanical weed ripper, flail mower and power tools to use across the county where required.

Cllr Dr Mark McClelland, Cabinet Member for Transport, said:

“This investment will enable Parish Stewards to provide a better all-round service for our communities and to take on larger, more challenging jobs to improve the safety and look of our local highways networks.

“In our business plan we have committed to having well-connected communities, and to working in partnership with town and parish councils, and the Parish Stewards scheme is an excellent example of meeting these two commitments.

“The new support team will be in place from later this year, so people should see them working hard in their communities soon.”
