Results of the parish poll asking if people in Salisbury have been announced, with 992 of voters voting ‘yes’ in support of a 5% cap on Salisbury City precept.

However, the overall turnout for the poll was 3.92%, from a possible 30,698 voters.

The poll question was “Do you support a 5% cap on future increases to the Salisbury City Council precept and a parish consultation if any proposed increase is larger than 5%?”

206 voted against supporting the cap, with four votes being rejected.

In a statement, the joint leaders of the City Council said:

"This unnecessary poll has sadly cost Salisbury taxpayers thousands of pounds and the extremely low turnout speaks for itself.

"Our joint City Council administration will continue working hard to manage public services and to communicate with our residents in as cost-efficient a manner as possible.

"We have already indicated that we will begin public consultation over next year's budget in the autumn."
