Wiltshire Air Ambulance pilots and paramedics have managed to raise over £7,000 for the charity with a virtual bike ride.

By the end of Valentine's Day, they had aimed to cycle 654 miles virtually in 7 days, the equivalent of pedalling to 10 local hospitals twice.

Raising money for the charity they love appears to have been more than enough motivation, as the team ended up reaching 1,191 miles.

It was set up to help raise the £5,182 needed to fund a MEQU °M Warmer unit, which can be used in emergencies to ensure injured patients receive the blood products carried by the crew at the required temperature.

With a target of £2,000, the team eclipsed that effort, with more than £7,200 donated by generous members of the public.

Critical care paramedic and ground base manager Richard Miller says:

"It’s been a great challenge for everyone in the aircrew to be part of and we’re absolutely delighted with the final outcome.

Not only did we smash the target we set for the number of miles we wanted to cycle, the funds raised has also exceeded all expectations and we can’t thank everyone who has donated enough for their kind generosity.

We’ll now be able to purchase the portable blood and fluid warmers, along with all the associated accessories needed and some spares, to further enhance our service."

One of the crew, Critical Care Paramedic James Hubbard racked up some of the miles in a full PPE suit while mentions also go out to Sophie Holt who completed 150 miles, Paul Rock for getting his family involved and Matt Wilcock and Craig Wilkins completing the rides in their flight suits.

The group also had some help from a champion para-cyclist as well.

The charity's ambassador Lauren Booth racked up 100 miles without stopping at the end of the challenge, raising an extra £776.
