'Not uncommon' for new bathing sites to have poor water quality
The Environment Agency says it will work with locals to make improvements

The Environment Agency says it's committed to improving bathing water quality in Fordingbridge - after it was graded as poor.
It follows test samples on the section of River Avon in the town, which only gained bathing status in May this year after months of local effort to secure it.
Storm overflows, privately owned sewage treatment systems upstream and agricultural and urban runoff are among the reasons for the low standard of water.
Fordingbridge Avon Bathers told us that they weren't surprised by the result, but said it was still disappointing.
Jim Flory, Area Environment Manager for Wessex said: “It is not uncommon for new bathing waters like Fordingbridge to initially have poor bathing water quality. Although, from an ecological perspective the water quality is good, this is the first year this site has been monitored, so it has not been managed to reduce the bacteria that can affect bathing water quality. It takes time to understand and tackle the sources of pollution.
“We have engaged with the local swimming group and the water company and will be setting up a steering group to work together with all local partners to improve the water quality.”
