'No excuse for speeding' says Wiltshire Police Special
Ken Bridgeman supports the Roads Policing Unit as a volunteer officer
A Wiltshire Police Special is reminding drivers in the county that there is no excuse for speeding.
So far this year almost 10,000 people have been caught driving over the speed limit.
Specials are volunteers with the Force who enjoy the same powers and responsibilities as full time members of the organisation.
Ken Bridgeman has been a special for a decade, supporting the Roads Policing Unit as a volunteer traffic officer.
"Speed enforcement is a really good thing," he told us. "The amount of road traffic collisions we have with pedestrians and other vehicles through speed, it shows you speed does kill, it does maim and it does have life-changing injuries to some people."
Ken said he can't believe the excuses some people give for speeding saying: "I just laugh at them".
Speaking to Greatest Hits Radio shortly after a stint on the roadside with the speed gun, he said he'd stopped a woman just beforehand who had given the excuse of a toothache for her child and being late to pick up another child as the reason for driving too quickly.
"There is no reason to speed," Ken insisted. "We've all got speedometers in our cars. People say 'I didn't know it was a 30 zone, but the signs are there, it's written on the road.
"People don't concentrate, and they don't care."
Speeding is one of the known causes of serious and fatal collisions on roads, making it one of the Fatal 5 offences behind the wheel.
Ken says he enjoys helping make our roads a safer place to be.
"I love every minute of it," he says. "I feel I am putting something back into the community."
He told us that education is the key and that not everyone will receive a ticket, with officers and specials opting of provide words of advice to drivers.
