The new cycle lanes that will help link Harnham and Salisbury District Hospital to the city centre have been installed.

Brown Street and St Ann Street has seen one lane turned into the bike path, while Exeter Street has removed the on street parking to install one.

One of the cycle lanes was installed on Exeter Street

The money has come from the Department for Transport's emergency active travel fund and as they had to install it in a short time frame, there was no requirement to hold a consultation process with stakeholders or the public.

The scheme is only temporary and the council will have to make a decision on what to do with it after 6 months.

14 car spaces in the are are being removed due to the new lanes.

Any local residents or business that had parking affected by the new paths have been offered alternative spaces nearby, Wiltshire Council say.

Bollards are there to prevent motorists from driving into the cycle lane

Cllr Bridget Wayman, Cabinet Member for Highways, said:

"These new cycle paths help to link the city centre to Harnham and the hospital, and offer a safer route to the city's businesses and employment for cyclists.

We recognise that some on-street parking will be removed as a result of the scheme, but have written to local residents to offer alternative parking nearby.

This is a temporary scheme that will be in place for six months, during which time we'll monitor its use before making a decision on its future."

The cycle route has proved controversial since it was installed last summer

There are bollards placed between cyclists and vehicles for the safety of people riding their bikes through the city.
