A practising New Forest commoner, who campaigns to keep the roads of the National Park safer and prevent animal deaths, has been honoured for her efforts.

Gilly Jones set up the New Forest Roads Awareness group almost eight years ago.

She's now been given an award from the New Forest Trust for 'freely giving her own time, making a significant contribution towards maintaining and improving the environment and economy' of the area.

Gilly was given the recognition at the Hampshire County Show, for 'working tirelessly' to reducing deaths of ponies, cattle and other livestock locally.

Hampshire Police have also paid tribute, praising her with bringing agencies together to tackle the issue.

They've said Op Mountie, where officers patrol to help prevent animal deaths, came from those meetings.

In a social media post, New Forest Heart Police said:

"We are so proud of Gilly and can’t thank her enough for all she does - everyone needs a Gilly on their team."
