It's famous for its ponies and picture-postcard locations and now the New Forest has been voted Europe's best national park.

It beat Snowdonia, which came in second in the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards for Destinations.

The New Forest came tenth best in the world, ahead of Banff National Park in Canada, the Grand Canyon in the US and Iceland’s Vatnajökull National Park.

The New Forest National Park covers almost 220 square miles

Anthony Climpson, chief executive of Go New Forest, said:

"Given the very real challenges of the last two years, being voted the number one national park in Europe and 10th in the world is an extremely welcome shot in the arm for all local tourism businesses.

"It’s pleasing the world’s travellers are finally catching up with what we’ve known for years, by falling in love with the magical wonder of our fabulous destination."

A Tripadvisor spokesperson said:

"2022 is shaping up to be the year we return to travel in a big way.

"Despite new variant surges, data shows that the desire to travel remains stronger than ever."
