Budget supermarket Aldi has unveiled plans for a new store on the eastern edge of Devizes.

The retailer wants to open its new supermarket on land south of the A361 London Road currently used as a motorcycle training facility.

The German firm says the £10 million store would create 40 new jobs.

Further jobs are likely to be created as part of a drive-through coffee shop, which forms part of the plans.

The proposals – which are at a very early stage – include 97 free car parking spaces and electric vehicle charging points.

The company says it is looking at ways in which locals could reach the site – which is nearly two miles from the town centre – by foot or bike.

Plans seem to suggest that access to the store would be off Horton Road, just past the former petrol station site and car wash.

And it says the store would be built to its latest environmentally-friendly design, with air source heat pumps supplemented with a refrigeration heat recovery system, solar panels, and LED lighting.

The eastern part of the brownfield site is allocated for employment land allocation by Wiltshire Council and for employment space in the Devizes community area strategy.

PRZM Real Estate and Aldi launched a public consultation exercise today (Monday, January 5) which will run until Sunday, January 18 after which the developer and retailer plan to lodge a planning application with Wiltshire Council.
