Two new additions for Boscombe Down Aviation Collection
The museum at Old Sarum has had a special delivery
A pair of new exhibits are going on show at the Boscombe Down Aviation Collection.
An Avro 707A and an English Electric P1A have both arrived at their new home this week.
The aircraft are on loan from the RAF Museum, but had most recently been on display in Manchester, but the exhibits there are closing.
We'll get to see them within the hangars at Old Sarum Airfield in due course.
WHAT IS AN AVRO 707A?
The distinctive looking aircraft was in service between 1949 and 1967, having its first ever flight at RAF Boscombe Down.
It was an experimental test aircraft for a particular type of fixed wing, that later became the Vulcan bomber.
WHAT IS AN ENGLISH ELECTRIC P1A?
That's a fighter jet from back in the 1960, 70s and 80s.
It was, and still remains, the only UK designed and built fighter aircraft that can go supersonic, reaching Mach 2.
These jets were also flown from RAF Boscombe Down during their service career.
The Boscombe Down Aviation Collection aims to celebrate the history of the local RAF base and the aircraft that have been flown there over the years.
We can visit Tuesdays to Sundays, between 10.00am and 5.00pm.
