Five days, 12 trekkers, 30 miles on foot and 2690 feet elevation is no mean feat and it's resulted in a huge boost for Salisbury Hospice Charity.
£35,000 was raised by the team who completed three stages of the Mont Blanc tour, a popular trek around the highest mountain in the Alps, during the the first week of September.
The twelve 'incredible supporters' started at Cormayeur in Italy at the base of Col de Ferret which included a steep climb at an an already high altitude which proved challenging for most members of the group.
Reaching the summit was the equivalent of climbing Salisbury Cathedral's spire seven times!
Day Two followed the Dranse de Ferret through the valley, amongst beautiful forests, traditional Swiss villages and farms, before climbing steeply to Champex.
The third and final day of the trek presented a few challenges for already tired and tight muscles including a long steady climb reaching a maximum elevation of 2575 feet. This included some crossing points so steep and dangerous they were supported by metal chains along the side of the mountain.
There were emotional scenes as the group arrived at their final destination Col de Forclaz, particularly as the trek had been delayed due to the pandemic.
Mchelle and Tommy Reid took part and dedicated the trek to Michelle’s Mum who died in the hospice.
“We can’t believe we are here and that we have done it, after everything that has happened!”
Mark Williams also took part along with his wife;
“Suzi and I are delighted to have helped support the amazing team at the Salisbury Hospice. As trekking newbies, we were a little apprehensive but the whole trip was an amazing experience and no doubt it will be the first of many! Feel good factor - 100%!!! Thank you team Hospice”.
Salisbury Hospice have praised the 'outstanding group' for their support.
“We are in awe of the determination of this extraordinary group of individuals. The money they have raised from this trek will greatly benefit Salisbury Hospice, ensuring that the vital end-of-life care the hospice provides reaches those in need in our community. A huge thank you to all our trekkers.”
Salisbury Hospice Charity aims to raise £1.5 million of the £2.9 million running costs of the Hospice each year.
