A public planning inquiry is to be held to determine whether 70 new houses can be built on the northern edge of Melksham.

In November 2024, land promoter Waddeton Park Ltd applied to constructed up to 70 dwellings on land off Woodrow Road.

The application included proposals for open space, ecological enhancement, play space and associated infrastructure.

The application was refused by Wiltshire Council planners in July this year. Planners said the proposed development was outside the limits of development defined for the market town, and also cited flood risk concerns.

The appellant says it will aim to prove that it can mitigate against flood risk and will designate 30 per cent of the development as ‘affordable’.

It will also argue that Wiltshire Council cannot hit its five-year housing target – which is likely to carry a great deal of weight.

The Planning Inspectorate will conduct a hearing at White Horse Business Park, Trowbridge on February 3, 2026.

Members of the public are entitled to attend the inquiry and, at the inspector’s discretion, express their views.
