Meet the man hoping to lead Salisbury FC to virtual glory

He's raising money for a local charity as well

David Wressell is trying to do something that we can only dream of happening, by taking Salisbury FC to the top of the football world.

No he's not replacing Steve Claridge as manager in real life, but has taken the reins on the popular computer game Football Manager.

David created the Whites in the game and teamed up with the club themselves to try take them to the very top.

As a Football Manager fanatic, there's not many better people for the job, and with David being born and growing up in the city, it makes it extra special.

The senior account manager films all the games and puts them up on his Youtube channel, Pressing Forward FM.

With the Whites being unable to play football in the real Ray Mac stadium, David hopes this fills a little bit of the void left by the suspension of the season:

"It's timed itself really well the series started in the middle of December, once we got all the stuff sorted like the database and things like that, and from that point there's not really been many games that the club have played and as we know the season has now been curtailed but I think it's giving people a chance to bridge the gap of not being able to interact with the club and from what I've seen there's quite a few of the actual fans of the club who have been getting stuck into it as well which is really nice to see."

I won't spoil the results and how well David has done so far, but when asked whether he was worried he was going to have some contact from either the virtual or real life chairman about job security, there was an element of concern from him as expectations are starting to rise:

"Ian Hammond (current Salisbury chairman) hung up his jacket at the end of season four on the game but at the start of the save he is always talking about how he still wants to be managing the club but he is aware of his age. His replacement has come in and has been quite pleased with my performances so I've not had any messages yet, not had any calls into the chairman's office but the expectations are slowly starting to ramp up a little bit as we kind of tread water a bit more so we've still got to keep on improving I think."

SUPPORT THE STARS APPEAL TO BE IN THE GAME

While doing this series, David wants as many people from the city as possible to get involved and is also doing something to raise money for one of Salisbury's charities.

For a £5 donation to the Stars Appeal, the person who donates will become a player in the game at the end of the season as part of the youth intake.

David told Greatest Hits Radio:

"I spoke to Salisbury FC and said look I want to get people involved in the save what do you reckon about looping in something like fundraiser maybe raise money for the club or a charity or something like that, they mentioned Stars Appeal were the charity of choice so I did some reading up, I knew of them but I didn't know a huge amount about the charity when it first came up, realised what they did and looked at the amazing work they do and it just kind of spawned from there."

You can donate to his Just Giving page here.

David is also looking for some interaction from fans of the club.

They have now outgrown the Ray Mac in game and he's asking people to get in touch on Twitter with ideas for names.

You can follow virtual Salisbury FC's progress on David's Youtube channel and hopefully one day we'll see them lift the Champions League.
