Salisbury has a host of charity shops and one is encouraging people to consider pre-loved gifts for what it calls a more sustainable Christmas.

Pre-loved Christmas gifts have seen an explosion in popularity recently, with people wanting to reduce their environmental impact and Money Saving Expert’s Martin Lewis urging consumers to shop frugally.

Tracy Stanley is a retail manager at Julia's House which has a store on Fisherton Street.

“Sustainable shopping is big news right now – there has never been a better time to browse your local charity shop for that perfect present for a loved one.

“In October alone we sold 63,473 items – that’s 63,473 items that would otherwise have ended up in landfill. Many of the items we sell are second-hand, but many have never been used. There are lots of as-new bargains to be found across all 13 of our shops in Wiltshire and Dorset, including clothes, accessories, homeware, electrical items, toys and games, books and much more.

“Shopping with Julia’s House is a great way to make a positive contribution towards the environment, while helping local families who desperately need our support.”

All items sold through the charity’s shops raise money to help the families of seriously ill children who may not live into adulthood.

The charity’s nurses and carers tailor their support to the needs of each family and are there for the whole family - for anxious and exhausted parents and to give frightened brothers and sisters some time just for them. The charity provides its vital respite care in families’ homes, in the community and at their hospices in Devizes and Corfe Mullen.
