An 80 metre long hedgerow's been planted at a new environmental project for Salisbury.

The Fisherton Wildlife Meadows have been set up by the City Council on land that used to be grazing paddocks.

It's eventually hoped it'll become home to wildflowers, more trees and hedging and a wildlife pond.

Local volunteers and members of the Salisbury Wildlife Group have made a start by planting the hedgerows earlier this month.

A team of people spent a day planting the new hedgerow, as the first step in creating the wildlife meadows

They're being brought in to be a habitat for animals, birds and insects, while also providing some shelter for them as they grow.

One of the Leaders of the City Council, Cllr Victoria Charleston said:

“Thank you to everyone who battled the elements to plant hedgerow at Fisherton Wildlife Meadows. The Meadows is a fantastic new initiative that will benefit wildlife and improve biodiversity and it is just one of many activities the City Council are undertaking to help the environment in Salisbury.”
