Vote on Gilbert the Dragon’s future in Salisbury
The City Council want our help to decide what to do
We’re being asked to vote on the future of Gilbert the Dragon.
Earlier this year, it was announced that Gilbert was beyond cost-effective repair and would be retired this year.
Having long been a popular staple of Salisbury’s summers in years gone by, Salisbury City Council said the succulents Gilbert is planted with ‘require considerable watering which is costly’ and that they were considering alternatives for the future.
And now the City Council have posed the question of Gilbert’s future to us.
They are proposing three choices, which we can vote on through their Facebook page.
Option A is an artificial box sculpture of Gilbert, that is about 7ft tall and would cost £7,000.
Option B is a chainsaw sculpture of Douglas Fir, standing 5-6ft tall and on a plinth, at a cost of £4,000.
The final option, C, is to say goodbye to Gilbert and put him in retirement (but who would want that?!)
We are asked to comment ‘A’, ‘B’, or ‘C’ on the Facebook post to cast our vote, with the deadline for votes of Monday 30th October.
