Gas main work to cause major disruption to Salisbury's Castle roundabout
SGN will be on site from today (Monday 5th February)
There's set to be major disruption on a busy route in Salisbury for the next three weeks, while same gas main works are carried out.
SGN say it's an 'urgent programme of work' to replace a leaking gas pipe that runs from Churchill Way West on to Castle Road.
That'll mean some lane closures from today (Monday 5th February) through until Monday 26th February.
First phase of work
The first portion of the work will see the slip road from the Churchill Way retail park, or Waitrose, closed.
There'll be no access to go north up the A345 Castle Road, or around that part of the Castle roundabout, with a signposted diversion route.
The rest of the Castle roundabout, and the southbound side of Castle Road itself, will remain open.
That phase is expected to last until Saturday 17th February.
Second phase of work
From Saturday 17th February, engineers will move onto Castle Road itself, along the northbound lane.
At this point, the access to Castle Road from the roundabout will be reopened, but the two lanes of traffic coming south will be reduced to one.
That's to allow northbound traffic through.
SGN say they're 'sorry for the inconvenience' that the works will cause.
In a statement on their website, they've explained why the work's needed:
"We are no longer able to repair the gas main and replacement is the only option to provide a permanent solution for future leaks in this location.
"The section of gas main being replaced is an old metal pipe with an ongoing history of gas leaks. By replacing the pipes with plastic pipes we'll provide a permanent solution to the leaks on a gas main that is crucial for supplying gas to the wider area of Salisbury."
