Works to replace gas main pipes at the A36 Wilton Roundabout is causing long tailbacks, with four way temporary traffic lights in place.

SGN contractors are on the final phase of works in the town that have been ongoing since September, to remove old metal pipes with new and more reliable plastic ones.

The gas supplier say it'll also address previous leaks in the system there.

The works started on Monday (11th November) and are due to last until Friday 22nd November.

The temporary traffic lights are being controlled manually between 7.00am and 7.00pm each day - but that's not helping the build-up of traffic in the area.

School buses have been delayed by around an hour, with Salisbury Reds also saying they're facing 'significant delays' as a result.

They've said the 2, 2A, PR3, Red 3 will be diverting from Skew bridge along Roman Road to Devizes Road, then along Devizes Road and down the Avenue to improve timings.

All services towards the city centre will serve their normal route.

The 25, 26 & 27 services will be running via Skew Road and through to Quidhampton, then over the Racecourse and via Stratford Tony to get into Wilton before resuming normal route.

This means stops between Skew Bridge and Wilton Market won't be served.

Wilton Councillor Pauline Church has been posting on social media to address some of the issues caused by the works:

In a statement, SGN say:

"We're sorry for any inconvenience these works may cause. We understand how disruptive work on the A36 is for road users and the local community - replacing the gas main is the only permanent solution to addressing the ongoing leaks and disruptive emergency repairs. Thank you for your patience and understanding."
