Gas leak in Durrington leads to exclusion zone

Emergency service were called to the Plaza in Durrington this morning (8th December) after report of a gas leak.

A leak was located underground. by the gas company which lead to a one hundred metre cordon in place around the Esso garage.

Local shops were shops closed and residents told to stay inside.

Residents have been told to stay inside with their doors and windows closed.

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue told Greatest Hits Radio:

"We received a call at 7.47am this morning about a suspected gas leak on Bulford Road, Durrington. One crew from Amesbury are currently in attendance alongside colleagues from Wiltshire Police - Bulford Road has been closed from Larkhill Road to Avondown Road, and a 100m exclusion zone has been put in place. The gas board have now located the leak – disruption in the area is expected to last for approximately 2-3 hours."

Mark Francis from Avon Motor Company was among the businesses asked to close and leave the area

"I couldn't smell gas from where we were but it was obviously major enough for them to react the way they did and to close the road."

The cordon was lifted just before 2pm with businesses allowed back to return.
