A gas leak in Amesbury means a 100 metre safety cordon has been set up, and some homes evacuated.

A digger carrying out work on the corner of Mill Green Road, backing onto Lyndhurst Road, has ruptured a mains pipe.

Emergency crews were called out at around 1.20pm this afternoon (Monday 29th July).

In a statement, gas supplier SGN said:

"Our engineers are on site following third party damage to our gas main.

"Currently we are working to assess the damage and plan how to make emergency repairs."

Police and firefighters are also on the scene to maintain the cordon and ensure safety.

Boscombe Road has also been closed for this time being, as it runs through the cordon area.

Anyone in the area who can smell gas is asked to keep doors and windows shut.
