Former Wiltshire Police and Crime Commissioner candidate Jonathon Seed has denied making a false declaration in his nomination papers.

The 63 year old chose to be tried by a jury after pleading not guilty to a charge of making a false statement contrary to Article 21 of the Police and Crime Commissioner Elections Order 2012, and Section 168 (1) Representation of the People's Act 1983.

Mr Seed was elected as the county's Police and Crime Commissioner in May however was unable to take on the role as he withdrew due to a historical driving offence.

Thames Valley Police launched an investigation into the circumstances of the election and passed a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

A Conservative Party spokesman said last month:

"As this matter is now subject to criminal proceedings it would not be appropriate for us to comment further."

He appeared in court via video link and spoke only to confirm his name, address, date of birth and enter his plea during a brief hearing at Oxford Magistrates'.

The defendant, of Chittoe Heath, Bromham, Wiltshire, was remanded on unconditional bail and ordered to appear at Oxford Crown Court on November 18th.
