A foal's had to be put to sleep following a hit and run collision on a notorious New Forest road.

It happened on Roger Penny Way, between Deadman's Hill and Ashley Walk just after 10.00pm on Friday (14th June).

Hampshire Police are now investigating what happened, as it's a criminal offence to fail to report crashes involving livestock in the National Park.

In a post on social media, Fordingbridge Police said:

"These incidents impact greatly on our commoning community and also the mare of foal which was clearly distressed.

"We all need to be mindful that there is a 40mph speed limit on New Forest roads to protect animals cyclists and other motorists, colliding with large animals can result in serious injury, so slow down and think of the hazards ahead on rural roads.

"The Fordingbridge team take road safety as a priority and will look to be out on the Roger Penny Way and other areas to target excessive speed."

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 101, quoting reference number 44240249504.
