The Flying Scotsman to go steaming through Salisbury
Famous train makes visit to city today ( 21st September)
Salisbury will be having a special visitor today as the Flying Scotsman train passes through the city.
The famous steam train arrives at the city's station this morning, leaving again at around 11:28 for a small tour around Hampshire.
It then returns at 18:52 before heading back to London Victoria.
The 60103 Flying Scotsman has been described as the most famous steam locomotive in the world.
It was built in 1923 and was employed on long-distance express trains, most notably on the London to Edinburgh service, hence the name.
The locomotive set two world records for steam traction, becoming the first steam locomotive to be officially authenticated at reaching 100 miles per hour on 30 November 1934, and then setting a record for the longest non-stop run by a steam locomotive when it ran 422 miles on 8 August 1989 while in Australia.
It was retired from regular service in 1963.
