A one-way system will be in place on Fisherton Street during the development works of Fisherton Gateway.

The contractors, Milestone Infrastructure, revealed their development plans at a 'Meet the Contractors' event on Tuesday (11th July) where they revealed how the works would affect local traffic.

The work is expected to last around 12 months.

Safer pavements

Proposed improvements aim to make the pedestrian areas safer, easier and more convenient to travel on foot into the heart of the city.

To achieve this, paths will be widened with additional street lighting, improving street furniture and wayfinding.

Milestone’s Regional Director, Lewis Cowley, explained the current issue that the developments would fix:

“At the moment on Fisherton Street, footpaths pinch, so if you’ve got cyclists or people with buggees, people have to step into the carriageway to get past.”

One-way system 'most appropriate' option

The implementation of a one-way system will have it’s downsides for road users, but Lewis told us many options were explored, with the one-way system being the most appropriate.

“The balance is the maintenance of traffic flow towards the city, which from our traffic data was the main direction of traffic flow, but then it provides us the space to deliver materials and work safely.

“When it comes to high street schemes there’s always a balance about production over disruption. If we were to close the street, we could it done much quicker, but that would come at an unacceptable level of disruption.”

Any bus stops that are impacted by the one-way system, which can be viewed in the photo below, they will be temporarily repositioned along the adjusted routes.
