Yesterday (1st June 2021), Winchester Street had to be partly closed whilst emergency services dealt with the fire in the city centre McDonald's restaurant at around 5pm.

Fire crews from Salisbury, Andover, Fordingbridge, Poole, Cranbourne, Westbourne and Devizes all helped to put out the blaze, which had started in the first floor toilet.

It's now been confirmed that was caused by toilet rolls being set alight.

Wiltshire Police is now investigating.

Detective Constable Martyn Powell said:

"As many are aware, this took considerable resources and generated a great deal of disruption not only to McDonalds but to the wider area whilst the incident was brought under control.

"I am happy to say that nobody was injured as a result of this incident, however, this could have been a lot worse and as such is being treated seriously.

"I would ask anyone with information relating to this incident to contact us on 101 and quote crime reference number 54210052351. Thank you."
