Campaigners from Extinction Rebellion Salisbury, are calling on local MP's to support the Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill.

As part of a nationwide day of action, the environmental campaigners came together on Friday, to call on parliament to take account for the CEE Bill.

The activists held placards calling on local MP John Glen to back the Bill and in the evening the group projected messages onto the college wall to be seen by those passing.

Di Cross from Extinction Rebellion Salisbury said:

"The CEE Bill - presented to Parliament by Green MP Caroline Lucas MP on 2 September 2020 - was due its second reading in the House of Commons on 26 March but this has been postponed. It will now have a very low chance of progressing in this Parliament due to the sheer volume of private members' bills lined up, further delaying the urgent action that's required to tackle the climate and nature emergencies,

"We are asking all the local MPs to support the bill and show a stronger commitment to environmental action. We're seeing endless reports coming out, many from the Government's own committees, highlighting that PM Boris Johnson isn't going far enough to tackle the climate and ecological emergency.

"Indeed, locally we are facing the desecration of the sacred landscape around Stonehenge for a tunnel and expressway - once again prioritising cars and fossil fuel use above environmental concerns and further adding to carbon emissions."

The CEE Bill is supported by more than 100 MPs from eight political parties and urges Government to take account of the UK's entire carbon footprint.

It's to protect nature in the UK and to prevent ecological damage along supply chains. The Bill is also there to make sure these changes are achieved in a fair and just way.

In 2019, the Government committed to a legally binding target of net zero emissions by 2050 but earlier this month the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) reported that Ministers still don't have a strategy to achieve this.
