Explorers crossing Atlantic in rowing boat for Salisbury based charity
It's hoped they'll finish this weekend
Three people are currently battling the elements of the ocean and they're own physical problems to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a row boat on behalf of a Salisbury based charity.
The Atlantic Nomads chose Alabaré’s Homes for Veterans as their charity beneficiary as they took on the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge which started in December.
The teams departed the Canary Islands on December 12th with the aim of covering around 3000 miles of ocean and arrive in Antigua and Barbuda.
A total of 36 teams have taken on the challenge, with James Woolley, Tom Rose and Taylor Winyard raising money for Alabare in their boat 'Doris'.
Being at sea for over 30 days, it's hoped the team will finish this weekend.
So far they have encountered steering problems, had GPS issues and had a broken oar gate.
They have been rowing solo through the nights and balancing various shift patterns; anything from 2 hours on, 2 hours off, to 1 hour on and 30 minutes off at times.
They’ve battled sleep deprivation, salt sores, physical extremes, sickness, as well as being left on their own to tackle the continuous challenges that the ocean and the isolation have thrown at them.
The dehydrated food the team are eating lasts a long time without going off, is highly nutritious and importantly reduces the weight and the space taken up in the boat.
To eat they convert ocean water into drinking water via a solar-powered unit they have on board, they boil that water on a camp stove, and then pour the hot water into the bag of dehydrated food, like a posh pot noodle.
They're raising funds for the charity who helps provide accommodation to armed forces veterans who may be homeless, or at risk of becoming so.
So far on their fundraising page, the crew have had over £13,000 donated, which will go to Alabaré’s Homes for Veterans.
