England Euro's run vital boost for pubs says Salisbury landlord
England take on Spain in the Euro 2024 final at 8pm tonight (14th July)
A Salisbury pub owner has told us England's run to the Euro 2024 final has given pubs in Salisbury a much needed boost.
Dave Hancock, who owns the Rude Giant Beer House on Brown Street, says the Three Lions progression through the tournament has made a massive difference to the hospitality sector.
"It's been well publicised that hospitality's had a bit of a rough ride the last few years," he said, adding: "Since COVID, we've had cost of living, price of goods, food and drink going up all the time, minimum wage going up it's been tough."
Dave told us the first couple of months in 2024 were among the worst he could remember and that the last four weeks have to be enjoyed for the boost they give.
Southgate keeping pubs and hopes alive
Gareth Southgate's side beat Slovakia in extra time and Switzerland on penalties before defeating the Netherlands 2-1 on Wednesday to reach the final.
Dave said the extended matches and kick off times at times that are normally quieter have really helped business.
"I was having a joke with some of the staff that I think Gareth Southgate is single handedly pumping the hospitality economy!" he said.
He continued, saying: "Other people that I talked to in the industry have just been just been loving it, it's been fantastic."
Dave also said that the nation is benefitting from a feel good factor that comes with England's success, saying its the spark for businesses to enjoy the rewards.
A carnival atmosphere
He told us that they've been inundated with reservation requests for tables for tonight's final with Spain.
"It's going to be a party atmosphere," he said, adding: "I remember four years ago we played Italy, although we lost, it was fantastic.
I remember Fisherton Street was just a wash with people with flags and it was all really, really good vibes.
"I think Sunday's going to be big. I think people are going to be coming out at lunchtime enjoying some food, enjoying some drinks, just having a really kind of carnival party atmosphere," he said.
Asked whether he thought England could get the job done and make history, Dave said football is coming home - but warned it could be a long night.
"I think another penalty shoot out Jordan Pickford will work his magic."
